The City of Berkeley is partnering with Californians for the Arts and the Alameda County Arts Commission to present a recognition of Arts, Culture and Creativity Month of April in Berkeley at a press conference held at Berkeley Repertory Theatre on April 6, 2023.
The press conference will bring together community members and city, county and state leaders to celebrate the importance of arts, culture and creativity in our local community and throughout the East Bay region. This one-hour event will feature remarks by elected officials, including the Berkeley City Mayor Jesse Arreguín, and will also include local performing arts groups Berkeley High Jazz Combo and Gamela Sekar Jaya. We invite community members as well as members of the press to attend to celebrate and share news about this event.
In 2019, Arts, Culture and Creativity Month was declared by the California Senate in a concurrent resolution to be held every April to recognize and celebrate the arts in California. In 2021, an additional resolution was declared to recognize artists as second responders. As an annual event, Californians for the Arts (CFTA) develops a series of engagement tools to encourage and produce activations throughout the state, including city and county proclamations, op-eds, special events, performances, social media, webinars, arts advocacy week, legislative meetings and more. The goal of our month-long campaign is to elevate public awareness of the value of the arts, culture bearers and creative workers and to encourage public investment and support for our industry.
