Mark Bookman – A unique blvend of hands-on management experience and in-depth knowledge of the law and public policy for tax-exempt organizations.

Mark Bookman is now engaged in legal and management consulting. From 1990 to 2019, he was the Zarem Professor of Business and Law at the American Jewish University. For 15 years he served as the University’s senior vice president and in-house counsel. He received his B.A. in (1970) from the University of California at Los Angeles in History and his J.D. degree (1973) from the same university in Law. Since 1973 he has been a member of the California Bar Association.

Pertinent to his current work with Theatrical Producers League of Los Angeles, at the request of another subset of nonprofits, Bookman researched the Dynamex case and AB5. This included multiple presentations to the approximately 100-member association.

In 1980, Bookman started Education and Non-Profit Consulting, Inc. doing legal and management consulting for a vast array of nonprofits. Since leaving his administrator and professor roles at the University, he has spent approximately 15 hours weekly assisting multiple non-profit. This has included the creation of a few new Sec. 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(3)PF entities annually.

Prior to joining the American Jewish University as a member of its tenured faculty in 1990, Bookman spent nearly two decades in progressively higher senior administrative positions within higher education and nonprofit organizations. His last two positions were as the Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs at the University of Houston and the General Manager of the Associated Students, California State University, Chico. In these positions, he is known for taking struggling organizations and transforming them into service oriented and financially successful entities. He has also served numerous professional associations including membership on the Executive Committee of the Association of College Unions - International and as President of The Auxiliary Organization Associations of the California State Universities. For the past 4 decades Bookman has also been a consultant and legal advisor for a wide range of nonprofit organizations and associations. While an administrator, Bookman has made numerous presentations to both regional and national associations on taxation and unfair competition issues, privatization of services, resource maximization, systems development and other related topics. His books, Contracting Collegiate Auxiliary Services, and Protecting Your Organization's Tax-Exempt Status, have been given very positive reviews. Some of his more recent work examines the interdependent relationship of the for-profit, government and nonprofit sectors in terms of service delivery and a vibrant economy. Bookman’s more recent consulting work has focused on board and management relationships, joint ventures and mergers, and the use of subsidiary and related corporations.

Since joining the American Jewish University's faculty in 1990, Bookman has served as the Chair of the Department of Business. In January of 1993 he also became responsible for the University's MBA Program. The MBA Program is unique in that its focus is the nonprofit sector. In this capacity, he was responsible for this academic department's curriculum, academic advising, the selection of all faculty and other related matters. Amongst the courses taught by Bookman are Business Law, Accounting, Constitutional Law and the Service Sector in the College of Arts and Science, as well as Human Resource Management and Law and Taxation at the graduate level.

From 2005 until July 2008 Bookman served the AJU as Provost and Senior VP. In this position, he was responsible for the University’s academic program. A major achievement during his tenure in this position was the very successful re-accreditation of the AJU for a 10-year period. In both this role and as COO, Bookman was responsible for extensive contact with members of the University’s board of directors.

Bookman has long been a student of higher education. While still in law school, he represented students from the University of California System in the revision of the Master Plan for Higher Education. His consulting work has also had him providing analysis as to future projections for higher education requirements for California. Recognizing his span of experience, Bookman was asked to join the Senior Commission of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 2003. In 2006 he became the Chair of the Commission’s Finance and Operating Committee and a member of its Executive Committee. He completed the maximum six year of continuous service in 2009.
