ArtScape LA: Transformation Beyond Crisis

How can arts and culture move beyond the profound economic and social devastation in a way that not only revives our sector, but also fundamentally transforms the landscape — pushing us forward toward greater justice, equity and inclusion?

Join Marie Kellier & Trevor Davis of the Empowerment Congress, as they tackle this challenge with the heads of the arts departments for the City and the County of Los Angeles, Kristin Sakoda (LA County Dept of Arts & Culture) & Danielle Brazell (Dept of Cultural Affairs, City of LA) — in a dialogue that promises to provide practical solutions for recovery, and to expand our vision of where arts and culture can go from here.

Hosted by the Empowerment Congress Arts & Culture Committee Co-Chairs, Marie Kellier & Trevor Davis, this conversation will:

— identify resources available to artists and arts organizations

— explore strategies to collaborate and strengthen resilience and regeneration

— address ways that artists can be supported in their journey to social and emotional wellness

— tackle the ways to challenge and reimagine the arts and culture landscape to increase justice, equity and inclusion.

— and rally the sector around advocacy for personal and organizational resilience.

The Empowerment Congress Arts & Culture Committee recognizes that participation in arts and culture is a human right, and we advocate for all people to have access to the means of creative expression. In this time of social turmoil, grief and uncertainty, we are committed to find ways for the arts and culture sector to recover from the profound impacts of COVID19, and to support the work of those addressing the racial injustices that sparked widespread social unrest. We seek to amplify the call for racial justice reflected in the Movement for Black Lives, and acknowledge the unsung numbers of artists and arts organizations that uplift the lives and struggles of black and brown communities. In this conversation, we will discuss ways that we can join cultural leaders whose work builds radical empathy and drives us to build a more just society.

Join our dialogue to help turn this tragic moment into a hopeful & transformative one.
